About Our Mission
Missions of Hope run schools in Mathare slum in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. This Christian organisation started in 2003 and has grown from having 90 pupils in one small school building to presently teaching over 5800 pupils in 10 school sites situated around the slum.
Mathare slum is one of the largest and poorest slums in Nairobi with over 180,000 inhabitants. A team from Glengormley Presbyterian Church is going to Kenya in April 2012 to help Missions of Hope build a boarding school for the children of the slum who have successfully progressed from primary into secondary education. Secondary education is not free in Kenya and the fees charged in state schools are beyond the means of the families of Mathare Slum. The boarding school will offer free education and the team from Glengormley is seeking to raise £30,000 to build classrooms at the boarding school site.
